There are several key events in the history of Oyón-Oion that are represented in the town's coat of arms. These are:

The long period during which Oyón-Oion was a dependency of the town of Laguardia, under the reign of the Kings of Navarre (923-1461).

The even longer period during which Oyón-Oion was a dependency of the Bishopric of Pamplona - or Nájera -(923-1862).

In the 1366 census of towns in Navarre, it appears as a dependency of the town of Laguardia.

As part of the Municipality of Laguardia, Oyón-Oion joined the Brotherhood of Alava en 1486.

In 1633, the town was granted royal privilege by Felipe IV, achieving independence from Laguardia and becoming a Villa (free town).

It was a major landmark on the first Pilgrims' Way to Santiago de Compostela, at least until 1095. |

By Decision of the Basque Government of 20 January 1992, the town's official name became OYÓN-OION.
